Tar Residuals Removal
Immediately following site acquisition in 2003, Tecumseh
began decommissioning the coke ovens. Part of the effort
entailed the removal and off-site recycling
of tar residuals from pipes and vessels. The continuing work has
been performed in accordance with a NYSDEC approved Best
Management Practices Plan.

Asbestos Survey and Abatement
In 2004, Tecumseh commissioned a comprehensive survey of
asbestos containing materials in remaining buildings and
structures related to the coke plant and powerhouse. Based
upon the survey results, asbestos abatement plans and
specifications were prepared and competitive bids were
solicited from qualified contractors. The asbestos contract
was awarded and work began in April 2005. Over 10,000
tons of asbestos containing material as been removed since
work began. The abatement work
is scheduled for completion in 2006. All abatement work is
continuously monitored by professional engineers trained and
certified by the NY Department of Labor. The asbestos is
being abated to prevent further degradation and dispersion
from weather, and to facilitate decommissioning of the coke
ovens and related structures.

| Interim Corrective Measures
In order to expedite high -priority remedial efforts,
Tecumseh entered an order on consent with the NYSDEC in
November 2004 to fast-track implementation of a groundwater
pump and treat system at the former Benzol Storage Yard. The
remedial system consists of : multiple groundwater and light
non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) collection and monitoring
wells; a groundwater treatment system with air emission
controls; and infiltration galleries where treated
groundwater is discharged to the subsurface. The remediation
was substantially completed in April 2005 and is being
monitored for effectiveness.
